Beagle - Breed Behavior
05 Aug
Disposition:
The Beagle is lively, sweet, and curious. Beagles will normally get along well with other dogs, although they will need to be socialized from an early age to ensure this. They must also be socialized early if they can ever be trusted alone with cats or other small animals. Beagles are strong-willed so will need someone with patience to handle their training. Because Beagles have such a loud bark, they must learn when it is okay to bark and when they must be quiet.
This breed does not do very well spending much time alone, and would be much happier with another dog if you will be gone all day – this can help greatly with barking issues, assuming both are trained.
Beagles have an amazing sense of smell and should therefore not be allowed off their leash in an area that is not enclosed. If a Beagle smells something interesting it can be nearly impossible to make them come back until they have thoroughly investigated.
Activity Level:
Beagles have a huge amount of energy and must be given time to use some of this energy. A medium-sized backyard/garden will do, as long as they are stimulated with playing fetch and other games with their owners. Beagles are fantastic with children and will often tire the children out before becoming tired itself.
This breed can live in an apartment, assuming they get enough exercise. Beagles do not sleep all day and are quite active while inside, so there must be enough room for them, as well as getting lots of exercise.
